There aren't many hotels that have the visual drama of the Ambasciatori. It teeters on the edge of a cliff that nosedives into the Mediterranean. As you can imagine, the sights are sensational - widescreen panoramas of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Head for the hotel's belvedere for the most breathtaking vistas. What's more, the Ambasciatori sits in a quiet, residential spot in Sorrento. It's only a 10-minute walk into the heart of town where shopping urges can be sated along the boutique-hemmed Corso Italia.

The hotel itself was built back in the Fifties, during the Riviera heydays. It's a snapshot of vintage Italy – button-fronted bellboys ferry luggage up to rooms and the interior is straight out of a Merchant Ivory film. The foyer is beautiful – marble floors, twinkling chandeliers, gilt-framed mirrors and fine antiques. Likewise, the rooms are equipped in a refined style with modern touches like satellite TVs and air-conditioning.

Outside, sub-tropical gardens – complete with orange and lemon trees – cocoon the hotel, and there are lots of quiet corners where you can hide away when you choose a break from the pool. Talking about of which, the pool has an exceptional hydro-massage section and is enveloped by a yawning sun terrace. You'll also uncover a bar here that has a barbecue grill at lunchtime. For a change of scene, an elevator whisks visitors down the cliffside to a private bathing platform and the sea.

The restaurant – Le Muse - deserves a special mention, too. Not only is the food 'molto bene' but just sitting here is a pleasure in itself. Diners are distracted from their tagliatelle by the breathtaking sea views provided by the floor-to-ceiling windows. It's worthwhile asking the maitre d' to arrange a table for you outside – the restaurant terrace at the Ambasciatori is arguably the best seat in town for a sunset meal.
